CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye
Canon: Firefly
Original or Alternate Universe: OU
Canon Point: Post-"Heart of Gold"
Number: RNG, please.
Setting: Joss Whedon's Firefly, a sci-fi western set approximately 500 years in the future. In this universe, Earth has been left behind long ago due to overpopulation and overuse of resources. Humanity has migrated to a nearby solar system, terraforming dozens of planets and moons to create new Earths for humans to live on. The central planets, or the "Core" planets, formed an Alliance, hoping to bring the entire system under the umbrella of a single, unified government. Not everyone wanted this, however, and the Unification War was long and bloody. Officially, the Alliance won, and those independents (or "browncoats") who can't quite accept Alliance rule now stick to the fontier planets, far away from the civilized Core, where there isn't as much law and order, people have to scrape by with whatever they can get - and there's also a lot more freedom.
History: Kaywinnit Lee Frye was born approximately 2497 on an unnamed frontier planet. Not much is known about her childhood, except that she spent much of it running around her father's engine shop, and that she had an affinity for mechanical things from a very early age.
She first met Malcolm Reynolds when Serenity was stopped on her home planet for repairs. She was having sex with Bester, the ship's mechanic at the time, in the engine room when Mal came in to question Bester about how long the repairs were taking. After she got her clothes back on, she quickly made Bester look like an incompetent fool by solving a problem that he claimed was unfixable. Mal, impressed with her skill, offered her Bester's job - which she took, after asking her Daddy's permission.
She'd been on Mal's crew for over a year when they stopped on Persephone, to pick up supplies. There, Kaylee was tasked with picking up some passengers - among them, a Shepherd called Book, and a young doctor from the Core called Simon Tam, who she quickly developed a crush on.
When someone attempted to contact an Alliance vessel, Mal immediately suspected Simon was the mole, and drew his gun on him. Unfortunately, he was wrong, and quickly found himself in a stand-off with the real Alliance mole, a man called Dobson. Kaylee stumbled onto the scene and Dobson shot her in the stomach. Simon used Kaylee's wound - and her life - as a bargaining chip for him and his sister, to secure them safe passage and keep them out of Alliance hands. Knowing that Kaylee would die without medical help, Mal agreed to help them run - but only as long as Kaylee stayed alive.
Simon was able to save Kaylee's life, proving his value as a medic, and Mal reluctantly agreed to let him and his sister stay on the Serenity for a time - as long as he could keep her under control.
Kaylee did her best to make the pair feel welcome, even explaining to Simon their plan to rob a train, despite the fact that not everyone on the crew felt like they should be there - primarily, Jayne.
When Mal found himself with a party invitation to make a contact for a job, he indulged Kaylee's fondness for frippery by buying her a frilly pink dress for the occasion, and she went along as his "date", enthusiastic about everything from the chandelier to the food, and charming many of the men present with her knowledge of engines.
Kaylee's crush on Simon didn't dissipate, and she tried to do things to impress him, such as buy him a nice gift on a frontier moon - or at least, she thought about it, until Simon showed up bemoaning the "junk" in the store and his current situation on Serenity. This was to become a regular point of contention as their relationship developed.
When a compression coil in the engine blew, leaving them without power and without life support, Kaylee was able to diagnose the problem, but wasn't able to fix it without a replacement part - thus reaching the limits of her abilities as a mechanic, something she blamed herself for, and felt completely helpless about it.
When Mal and Wash were captured by Niska, Kaylee, out of love and loyalty for her captain, became part of the rescue mission on Niska's space station. Handed a gun and told to guard the rear, she became terrified when the shooting actually started and was unable to do anything to help. Pinned down by three armed men, River emerged, took the gun from Kaylee and killed all three of them without even looking. This alarmed Kaylee, who had seen River as a troubled but ultimately harmless (and sweet) young woman up to that point, and eventually she informed Mal of what had happened that day, despite knowing that Simon would be angry with her for sharing the information that River was apparently a trained assassin.
When Mal and Zoe received the body of a dead compatriot in the mail, Kaylee became fascinated with his story, listening to his message over and over in the engine room. When he shocked them all by being not actually dead, Kaylee took a shine to him, their friendly chatter quickly giving way to a flirtation. Unfortunately, Kaylee's warm and friendly nature prevented her from understanding how desperate Tracey could be, and when he believed he was going to be turned into the feds, he took Kaylee hostage, holding a gun to her and threatening her life. Tracey died (for real this time), but he definitely left an impact on Kaylee.
Most recently, Kaylee helped fortify Nandi's whorehouse in anticipation of a shootout, and assisted Wash in securing the Serenity when it was boarded by a couple of thugs. It is just after these events that she will be arriving on the Tranquility.
Personality:
I don't believe there is a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful. Sometimes you just want to duct tape her mouth and dump her in the hold for a month.
- Mal
You just gotta have faith in people.
- Kaylee
Kaylee is, first and foremost, an optimist. She sees the best in people, gives her trust freely, and loves unconditionally. She can almost always find a good side to any situation. When Mal calls himself a "mean old man", she insists that he is "nice" and "always takes care of us". When others call Inara a "whore", Kaylee admires her and envies her glamorous lifestyle, beautiful clothes and charming clients. When Jayne complains about bringing passengers on Serenity, Kaylee insists she enjoys meeting new people and hearing their stories. Even when she's been shot in the stomach, she is able to retain her positive outlook on life, telling Mal that it wasn't anyone's fault, and not to blame Simon for what happened.
Kaylee is very dear. To all of us.
- Inara
The people she loves most of course, are the crew of the Serenity. They're essentially her family, and she would do anything for them. Her loyalty to them is limitless. If Mal is the paternalistic father-figure of the crew, then Kaylee is the "little sister," someone everyone - even the often-thuggish Jayne - feels protective of. When her life is threatened by a gunshot wound, he is seen sitting outside the infirmary as Simon operates on her, even though earlier he mocked her in front of everyone. To a large extent she's the emotional heart of Serenity's crew. Perhaps she's been a bit sheltered by them, though she is by no means ignorant of the dangers of space.
Jewel Staite, the actress who played Kaylee, described her as a "floozy who wears her heart on her sleeve," and indeed, she's essentially an open book. She is incapable of lying or being deceptive - it's simply not in her nature, though she can prevaricate and be evasive when she wants. For instance, in "Bushwhacked," when the Serenity's crew is brought in for questioning by the feds, instead of answering the questions put to her, Kaylee cheerfully prattles on about engines to a gobsmacked interrogator.
She may not be very "book-smart", but Kaylee can be quite clever and observant of people, and she's generally a good judge of character. Nor should her cheerfulness be mistaken for innocence - Kaylee isn't a child, but a very sensual woman. She savors the taste of delicacies like strawberries, loves having her hair brushed and dressing up in fancy clothes, and she enjoys sex as well.
As much as she wears her heart on her sleeve, so does Kaylee also speak her mind - even when doing so isn't necessarily the most tactful thing to do. Her honesty might be a fault at times, but she doesn't see it that way, and she tends to be disdainful of people who can't just say what they mean, even when it's simply the result of social awkwardness. Simon, while she is very attracted to him, often finds himself facing her wrath when he says the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Machines just got workin's, and they... talk to me.
Kaylee is a baseline human, with no special powers or abilities. However, she has a strong affinity for machines that began at a very early age. She could be considered something of a prodigy. She just knows how engines work, without ever having had much, if any, formal training. Most of what she knows, she picked up from tinkering around her father's engine yard back home. She is most comfortable in the engine room of Serenity, which is her domain, and it's her job to keep Serenity flying, no matter what. She rarely fails at this.
As for other skills, Kaylee doesn't have many. Her formal education was rudimentary at best, but she's far from stupid. She's a relatively good judge of character (if a bit on the optimistic side).
She's not at all a fighter, however, and barely knows how to use a gun. In a tense situation she usually gets scared, and when under fire she is seen freezing up, unable to do anything, even with a gun in her hands.
Inventory: - a set of torn, greasy coveralls, with a few cutesy patches hand-sewn over the pockets
- a pink flowered shirt
- a pair of corduroy pants
- bra + panties
- a pair of flip-flops
- a blue, faux-silk button-down jacket
- a cheap, colorful paper sunshade
- a hand-painted cardboard sign, cheerfully decorated with the words "Kaylee's room" on it
- a red metal tool box, containing various basic tools - wrench, spanner, wire cutters, etc.
Appearance: Kaylee is played by Jewel Staite. She's rather diminutive, with a cute smile, a button nose, hazel eyes and brown hair. She likes bright colors, though most often she's seen in her muted green coveralls.

SAMPLES
Log Sample: Kaylee has always been adaptable, in her own way. Mostly, this way involves smiling and being friendly to everyone she meets, in most situations that don't involve gunfire. Still, waking up in a vat of goo, with a tube down her throat - it's disorienting to say the least.
But she's alive, that's something, and not injured as far as she can tell, that's something else. Besides, the rest of the people here are in the same situation, so obviously, however they got here, it must've been some kind of accident. Or misunderstanding. Either way, they're out in the black, and Kaylee knows - knows with the certainty of complete and perfect trust - that Mal will be coming to find her. Mal would never, ever just leave her behind somewhere, not if it's in his power to get her back.
That's just the kind of man he is, that's just the kind of Captain he is. He looks out for his crew.
So Kaylee takes it all in stride, really. After all, everyone else here is in the same sort of trouble - too bad Serenity can't hold them all. Otherwise she'd be bound and determined to help all of them get back to where they belong.
As it is, the most she can do is offer a friendly smile to these strangers, say hello and let them know they're not alone in the universe, show them it's not so bad, really.
"Hi, there," she says to someone who looks particularly lost, particularly confused. "You okay? My name's Kaylee."
Comms Sample: [The girl who opens up the video feed looks surprisingly cheerful, given the circumstances of her recent arrival. Her hair is down and framing her face, and she offers a warm smile to the camera, as well as a little wave.] Hi, there. Name's Kaylee. I guess I'm gonna be stuck here for a spell, so I might as well come right out with it: anybody know where the engine room is? I've never seen a ship like this, and I'd like to take a look at her workings, if you know what I mean. I work on a lotta engines, this one don't feel like any of the others.
[She pauses, and glances around behind her for a moment.] Also, anybody got some paint? If I'm gonna be staying here, this room is gonna need some cheeriness. Maybe some flowers, you know? I like flowers.
